In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vegetable oil.
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
Preheat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
Insert wooden skewers into the hot dogs, leaving enough skewer exposed to hold.
Dip each hot dog into the batter, coating evenly.
Carefully place the battered hot dogs into the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry for 3-5 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove the corn dogs from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
Serve immediately with your favorite condiments.
