  1. Caramelize the Onions:

    • In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and add sliced onions.
    • Sprinkle with sugar, salt, black pepper, and thyme.
    • Cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.
    • Add beef broth and cook for another 2 minutes. Set aside to cool.
  1. Prepare the Meatloaf Mixture:

    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
    • Stir in caramelized onions (reserve a few tablespoons for topping) and shredded cheese.
    • Mix until just combined (don’t overmix).
  2. Shape & Bake:

    • Form the mixture into a loaf shape and place it in a greased or parchment-lined baking dish.
    • Bake for 40 minutes.
  3. Add Toppings & Finish Baking:

    • Remove from oven and sprinkle with the remaining shredded cheese and reserved onions.
    • Bake for another 15 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
    • (Optional) Add French-fried onions during the last 5 minutes for a crispy top.
  4. Rest & Serve:
